Dear One,
I was just listening to Heidi Grant Halvorson’s talk with Ben Dean on Coaching Toward
Happiness and was blown away by just HOW effective it is to have an alternative
strategy in mind (decided on) for any behavior you want to stop having or to simply
commit to yourself a specific place and time do do an activity you want to do.
It only takes 5 seconds to tell yourself: “The next time I…..(trigger for the unwanted
behavior)… I will do…(alternative healthy, positive behavior).
Example: “The next time I go searching for something to chew on, I’ll choose a
piece of gum instead of food” or “The next time a waiter leaves a basket of
bread on my table, I’ll have them take it away or give it to the table next to me”.
This works for what you want to do as well. Take 5 seconds right now to give
yourself a SPECIFIC place and time to do an activity you WANT to do but can’t
seem to accomplish.
Go ahead, I’ll wait for you…
You’ve just DOUBLED your chances of actually doing it (whether you do it at the
time you agreed or not. I knew this was powerful but had no idea it was THIS
effective when I recommended it to clients.
